A rich VR escape room adventure

Cliffstone Manor is a steampunk themed virtual reality adventure/escape room game for the HTC VIVE, Oculus rift, and Windows Mixed Reality HMDs.

I was the sole developer on this project.  I did all the Unity development, 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, visual effects, animation, and sound.  I also handled all work involved with launching on Steam.

After getting my VIVE in late 2016, I was very disappointed in the quality of most of the VR content on Steam at that time.  I knew I could do better, so I set out to make one of the best Indie Studio VR escape room games on the store. This was a very ambitious project for one person but using tools like Substance Painter and PlayMaker made it possible within a reasonable amount of time.  I worked on this game nights and weekends for nine months before launching it on Steam in October of 2017. The game received mostly posotive reviews and was covered on several VR blogs.

Inside the editor

Being the sole developer on a game like this is no easy task.  I had to make use of many of Unity’s systems like Mecanim, Enlighten, Shuriken and others.  For the VR functionality I used VRTK. The real key to this games success however was Playmaker.  It allowed me to quickly iterate on the gameplay until I found solutions for the complex puzzles in this game.

Gameplay screen grabs

I had a goal in mind when I began exploring art styles, 100% of the artwork would be of my own creation.  Every 3D model in the game and it’s textures were created by me using Maya LT, Substance Painter, Photoshop, and Illustrator.  The paintings in the game are from the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC who has generously made a huge amount of their collection available for commercial use.
